Getting children back into a sleep routine

During school holidays it is common for children to stay up a little later, spend a little more time on screens before bed and generally fall into less regular sleep routines.  During term time, however, its important for children to have predictable bedtimes.  We are well aware that sleeping helps to support brain development, consolidate learning, the processing of emotions and allowing the body to recover from the demands of the day.

When children’s sleep patterns become disrupted, you might see the results. Children start having difficulty falling asleep, waking in the morning, feeling groggy and tired during the day. 

Yaqoot Fatima and Danielle Wilson are specialists in sleep at the University of the Sunshine Coast and Jasneek Chawlafor, at the University of Queensland offer three ways of how to get children back into a sleep routine.

  1. Have regular bed and wake times.

Set regular times for going to bed and waking both during the week and weekends.  If your child has been staying up later over the holidays, gradually bring bedtime earlier by 15 to 30 minutes every few nights until it’s back in line with their usual routine.  Do the same for waking up time.  Earlier waking can be encouraged with exposure to daylight in the bedroom and a healthy breakfast.

  1. Have a wind-down routine.

Going to bed earlier can be challenging for some children.  A calming bedtime routine of relaxing activities may help.  Also, a warm bath, soft music, reading a book or cuddling with you may be helpful. 

  1. Make bedrooms quiet and dark.

The sleep environment is important.  A quiet, dark, comfortable space helps the brain realise that it’s time to sleep.  Younger children can be motivated to follow a routine by sticker charts or other reward systems.  This helps children understand that sleep is a positive and predictable part of the day.

Getting sleep routines back on track may take a week or two so don’t delay.  At the beginning of the new school term, start immediately and stay consistent.

How to have a conversation with your child

Why are children seemingly so reluctant to talk about school?  How many times do you ask them ‘How was school today’ and they respond with a curt ‘Fine’. 

Shelbie Witte, writing for The Conversation, says that teachers may have the same problems in the classroom, with some learners showing unwillingness to offer more than brief or vague answers to their questions.  They show nervousness if asked for clarification or explanation of their responses.  Shelbie believes that this can have consequences: such children may become adults or avoid asking questions or admitting what they don’t know.

As an educator, researcher and parent who atudies adolescent education, she offers five strategies you can use with children to make them better conversationalists and to cultivate their curiosity.

  1. Be creative with your questions

Try to avoid questions that need only a one-word response.

Children want to know whether the adults in their lives are genuinely interested in their day. Asking the same, rote questions each day says otherwise.

Try shaking things up and ask more specific, open-ended questions instead: “What was the most interesting thing you did today?”

“If you could turn back time and change how you handled something at school today, what would it be?”

“If you were in charge of your class tomorrow, what would you teach?”

  1. Engage with their curiosity

As important as it is for adults to ask questions that convey genuine interest, it’s just as valuable to engage with questions that children ask.

Young children ask “why” so often that adults can find themselves falling back on a classic retort: “Because I said so!”

When a “why” gets shut down, a child’s curiosity and wonder are also snuffed out. Instead, try acknowledging and engaging with this curiosity: “Good question. Here’s my thinking …” or “Let’s talk about why this is important …”

At the same time, you can also model other ways to ask questions: “I’ve wondered that too. Do you think it’s because …?”

  1. Think out loud

When adults verbalize their thinking out loud, they’re showing children how their brains work and how problems get solved.

“Do you ever wonder why cats purr?”

“Do you think I can mix the dry and wet ingredients for the cake at the same time?”

“I noticed the flags were at half-staff today in front of your school. Could you ask someone to find out why?”

Doing so encourages children to listen to their inner voice—and to trust the questions that emerge, no matter how silly they might seem.

  1. Be a seeker

Admitting you don’t know the answer to something can be uncomfortable, especially because children often expect their parents to know everything. But simply responding “I don’t know” to a question isn’t enough. It’s important to show children how to find answers, whether it’s through assembly manuals, recipes or a nutrition label.

If you come across a confusing passage in a book, you can show youngsters how to use the tools contained within the book: a glossary, table of contents or index.

Then there are the questions that don’t have a single, simple answer. You can explain how more than one internet search might be necessary and it’s probably not a great idea to simply accept the first answer that pops up.

By showing children that it’s OK to not know all the answers, you give them the confidence to ask more questions.

  1. What I heard you say was …

Children can have a hard time articulating what they’re curious or confused about.

For this reason, active listening is a critical behaviour to model. If you’re confused about what you’re hearing, rather than saying something like, “I don’t get what you’re saying,” you could repeat what you heard, and then ask, “Is that what you’re saying?”

If they give a meandering answer to your question—even if they go off topic—you can highlight what stood out to you to show that you were really listening: “What I really appreciated about your answer to my question was …”

Avoid the temptation to multitask when children approach you with questions. If you put your phone away, make eye contact and ask follow-up questions, kids will be more willing to keep asking questions in the future.

Children are born with a natural wonder and enthusiasm for learning. As Carl Sagan said, “The complex and subtle problems we face can only have complex and subtle solutions and we need people able to think complex and subtle thoughts. I believe a great many children have that capability if only they are encouraged.”

Prodding children to tap into their own curiosity while respecting their needs, limitations and fears can have a powerful impact on their ability to ask and answer questions about the world, big and small—or, at the very least, give them the confidence to try.

Last week I wrote about the importance of early developing reflexes for brain development.  This week, we’ll have a brief look at the importance of those reflexes being integrated into developing brain functions.  Once the brain has developed certain areas, the early reflexes are no longer needed, so any sign of them still being present is a red flag for healthy neurodevelopment. 

They should ‘disappear’ after infancy but when they persist,  they can interfere with:

Cognitive Skills

  • Difficulty with focus and attention
  • Challenges in reading and writing due to poor eye tracking or hand-eye coordination
  • Trouble with processing sensory input, leading to overstimulation or withdrawal

Motor Skills

  • Poor balance and posture
  • Awkward or delayed gross motor skills (e.g., walking, jumping)
  • Struggles with fine motor control, affecting tasks like handwriting or using utensils

Emotional Regulation

  • Heightened anxiety or emotional reactivity
  • Difficulty with self-soothing
  • Challenges in social interaction due to sensory overload or impulsivity

Early interventions that make a difference

The good news? Reflex integration can be supported through targeted activities.  ILT is an approach that uses a movement based programme to stimulate the brainstem and promote reflex inhibition.   Activities like crawling and rolling mimic early developmental stages.  These give the brain a ‘second chance’ to complete unfinished reflex integration and thus help brain development.

Why Early Support Matters

Early intervention can:

  • Prevent academic and social delays
  • Improve self-confidence and independence
  • Reduce frustration for both child and caregivers

Some home-based activities

Home-based activities for reflex integration can be playful, simple, and surprisingly effective. These exercises help the nervous system “rewire” and support healthy development — especially for children with retained primitive reflexes. Here are some engaging options you can try at home:

Rhythmic Movement Exercises

These mimic early developmental patterns and stimulate the brainstem.

  • Cross Crawls: Touch your right elbow to your left knee and alternate. Great for integrating the Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR).
  • Homolateral Crawling: Crawl with same-side limbs moving together. Helps with coordination and body awareness.
  • Rocking on Hands and Knees: Gently rock back and forth to stimulate vestibular input and calm the nervous system.

Balance & Core Muscle Activities

These help with postural control and inhibit reflexes like the Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR).

  • Animal Walks: Bear walk, crab walk, or frog jumps — fun and functional!
  • Balance Beam: Use a strip of tape on the floor and walk heel-to-toe.
  • Yoga for Kids: Poses like “tree,” “cat-cow,” and “downward dog” build strength and coordination.

Sensory Play

Supports sensory integration and emotional regulation.

  • Sand or Rice Bin Exploration: Hide small toys and let kids dig with their hands.
  • Water Play: Pouring, scooping, and splashing stimulate tactile and proprioceptive senses.
  • Textured Crafts: Use cotton balls, foil, fabric, and beads to create art with varied textures.

Music & Movement

Rhythmic activities help regulate reflexes and improve timing.

  • Dancing to Music: Encourage free movement to different tempos.
  • Clapping Games: Try “Pat-a-cake” or rhythm clapping to build coordination.
  • Marching & Drumming: Great for bilateral coordination and auditory processing.

Why do early reflexive movements matter?

 

Early, or prenatal, reflexive movements are involuntary movements that occur in the womb, such as:

  • Kicking
  • Stretching
  • Sucking
  • Grasping

They’re not controlled by conscious thought but are triggered by the developing nervous system.

 How Do These Movements Influence Brain Development?

Reflexive movements aren’t just random flutters — they’re crucial for wiring the brain. Here’s how:

  1. Stimulating Neural Pathways
  • Every movement sends signals through the spinal cord and brainstem, activating neurons.
  • This repeated signalling helps strengthen synaptic connections, which are the links between neurons.
  1. Promoting Synaptic growth
  • Movement encourages the formation of new synapses — the junctions where neurons communicate. Eventually this results in the neural network that makes the brain functional.
  • The more varied the movement, the more complex the neural network becomes.
  1. Supporting Brain Maturation
  • Reflexive movements are signs that the central nervous system is maturing.
  • Pediatricians often assess reflexes to evaluate neurological health in newborns.

Why It Matters

Without these early movements, the brain wouldn’t receive the stimulation it needs to grow, connect, and specialize. It’s a beautiful feedback loop: movement drives brain development, and brain development refines movement.

Cognitive Development: Movement as mental blueprint

Reflexive movements in the womb help build the brain’s capacity for thinking and learning.

How it works:

  • Sensorimotor Integration: These movements activate sensory systems (touch, proprioception, vestibular), which feed data into the brain. This helps the brain learn to process input and generate output, a key skill for cognition.
  • Neural Mapping: Repetitive movements help the brain map the body — a process called body schema. This is essential for spatial awareness, attention, and even language development later on.
  • Executive Function Seeds: Coordinated reflexes lay the groundwork for goal-directed behavior. For example, the rooting reflex (turning toward touch) is a precursor to intentional searching and problem-solving.

Emotional Development

Even before birth, babies begin to experience and respond to emotional cues — and reflexive movements are part of that emotional scaffolding.

Key connections:

  • Regulation & Soothing: Reflexes like sucking and grasping are self-soothing mechanisms. They help infants regulate stress and begin to form emotional resilience.
  • Attachment Readiness: Movements like turning toward a voice or grasping a finger prepare the baby for bonding behaviours after birth. These reflexes help babies recognize caregivers and respond to comfort.
  • Environmental Sensitivity: Studies show that babies in the womb respond to music, voices, and even maternal stress levels. Reflexive kicks or movements may increase when the mother is anxious, suggesting a shared emotional state.

To summarise: Reflexes as building blocks of the brain:

Very briefly, the primitive or prenatal reflexes:

  • Stimulate neural growth
  • Train the brain to respond to the world
  • Prepare the infant for social and emotional interaction

This is why Integrated Learning Therapy considers healthy reflex development as crucial for neurodevelopment.  They do help ensure that children develop the ability to learn efficiently once they enter school.

Should some children repeat Grade R?

 

Most pre-school children amaze us with their ability.  Little Hanlie, at aged two, can name all the animals in her favourite picture book.  Hansie names most of the cars on the road before his third birthday and many four year olds are fascinated by dinosaurs and know their long, difficult names.

Then they begin school and the wheels come off.  This can be devastating, especially if they have been encouraged to start school early because of their demonstrated intelligence.  It is so important for families to know that even if their child has learned to read at a very early age, they may not be ready to learn.  Things may go well in the first year or so but slowly progress falls behind.  Very often parents come along (wisely) for a neurodevelopment evaluation and tell us that the child will be repeating Grade R because of emotional immaturity.  This is not entirely accurate.  Failing to cope with school has far more to do with brain maturity – what we call a state of learning readiness at school-going age.

Brain age vs chronological age

The trouble is that children are sent to school at an age determined by their birthday rather than by their stage of brain development.  We are not robots, programmed to behave predictably.  We are human beings who have a very personal timetable of development.  Our brains are not ready to learn at a prescribed date but are subject to growth spurts that determine its level of functioning.   Strategies for teaching reading, for example, will be different for children who have not yet fully developed the connections between the two brain hemispheres.  Children may seem to be learning to read well but after Grade 3, begin to fail because they have relied on the look and see methods which is basically aimed at the right brain hemisphere.  This is too limiting and they may have to be taught all over again.

Teachers are very well aware that boys are slower in brain development than girls.  We also know that there are more boys who experience learning and school-related behavior problems (e.g. hyperactivity) than girls.  The theory goes that, since boys’ brains develop more slowly, their brains remain longer in the very early brain stages, making them more vulnerable to viral damage or any slight accidents.

A maturity lag can cause all kinds of problems.  If, for example, a child’s visual system is not fully developed, he might not be able to clearly differentiate letters.  This means that he may learn the word ‘d-o-g’ by recognizing the shape of the whole word, reinforced by having the word accompanied by many pictures.  But using pictures to remember individual words won’t help him when he has to do more advanced reading.  They don’t help him use letters to read other words.   These are ‘splinter skills’ that children develop that work well for a while but not in the higher grades.

And in the higher grades, few realise that the child is having problems because he was never ready to read in the first place.

It’s important to know a child’s stage of brain development

It is so important to consider an assessment of brain development before deciding on school entry.  Far more important than school readiness is the knowledge that the child’s brain is ready to learn.

For neurodevelopmental reasons, it is disturbing to consider the consequences for certain children following the government’s suggestion that no child will be held back in Grade R.  Sometimes it is necessary to do so.  To counter this, give careful thought to arranging to have your child assessed before school entry.  By assessment, we mean NOT school readiness, but learning readiness – which is not the same thing.

Jill Colton, writing for The Conversation, says that young people face a range of challenges when they move from primary school to the high school years.

The high school environment and learning methods can feel very different from primary school—with different classrooms and multiple teachers. In combination with the physical and cognitive changes also going on with adolescence, this can cause stress.

Young people’s motivation around school work can take a dive during this time. This can be because their sense of belonging is disrupted.

This change can also feel lonely and unsettling, particularly if they don’t know many or any students in their new school.

What can you do?

Encourage your child to go along if the high school offers an opportunity for visiting and being orientated into the new environment. These opportunities to visit the new school will allow you to find out what your child thinks of this time of transition. This is a perfect time to show your appreciation of their resilience (“good on you for going along, I’m proud of the way you listened to the principal’s address with an open mind”) and let them know you are there for them.

You could ask the school about where students store their belongings during the day, what the school day looks like, and where they can go if they are feeling unsure or worried.

Encourage friendships

We know friendships can help young people feel safe and like they belong.

Some children will be moving into high school with friends or peers from their primary school, and the December holidays are a great time to meet up so those important connections are maintained.

Connections can also be made with older students who attend the school, through family, sport or other social and community links.

Others will be starting at a new school where they do not know anyone. You can use this time ahead to talk about ways of initiating and sustaining peer relationships.

Suggest they take time to notice the other people in their class and get to know their names. It is also helpful to be a good listener but also be prepared to tell others something about yourself.

Changes in the brain

Moving from primary to high school coincides with an important stage in a young person’s brain. This can be a time of great social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth. It can see a fluctuation in their moods, motivation and well-being.

But it also sees adolescents’ ability to process new information increase, as well as the importance of connection to their peers.

Talk to your child about recognizing their emotions and practicing self-compassion—treating oneself with kindness—which has been shown to support resilience and well-being.

Be available to talk through decisions (be the “guide on the side”), discuss complex topics (while appreciating their opinions) and model healthy behaviours (such as eating well and exercising). For example, “you seem a bit stressed at the moment. That could be because there is a big change about to happen. Do you want talk about it? Let’s go for a walk or ride

Talking with your child

It’s important for kids to feel like they will be listened to without judgment, and know the adults in their lives will be there for them, even when they make a mistake.

But, keep in mind, adolescents are less likely to speak to parents or want parents to be involved at this time as increasingly, they are trying to manage socially and emotionally on their own.

Instead of giving advice/telling your child what to do, you could instead discuss how difficult situations can be navigated—and support them to solve their own problems, such as talking to teachers themselves.

Let your child know it is OK to talk with other trusted adults as they work through the challenges and changes in their lives.
