Thoughts on teaching handwriting

Education departments in some countries have expressed the opinion that there is no longer a need to teach children cursive (joined up letters) writing.  This is because there is a decreasing need to write at all thanks to the use of computers, i-pads, cell phones and other devices. We spend far more time pressing letter keys than we do with pen and paper.   So, superficially, it does make sense for learners to spend classroom time on keyboard skills once they have been taught printed letters, rather than mastering good handwriting. There are, however, some pros and cons of handwriting that need to be considered before any decision is made.

Arguments for less focus on handwriting

Many learners may benefit from not having to depend on handwriting for communication of knowledge and skills.  Those with handwriting difficulties try to avoid any written task and some even become disruptive when they have to write something down.  Indeed, Linda Silverman, a leading figure in the field of gifted child education, believes that handwriting seems to play a much more significant role in underdevelopment than has often been realized.  One of the common characteristics of underachievement is an inability to produce written work of a suitable quality to match the learner’s demonstrated (usually verbal) potential.  This leads to consequences such as inattention, avoidance, low motivation, low self-esteem, a negative attitude towards school in general and behavioural problems. As a result of this realisation, it is fairly normal these days for schools to allow a scribe to help a child with writing difficulties, and even laptop computers are allowed in classrooms.

But there is another side to this story.  Why do some children struggle with handwriting at all?  The answer lies in neurodevelopment, which is why Integrated Learning Therapy practitioners take an active interest in this subject.

When we learn to write, we rely on many developed and developing skills.  Our posture, hand grip and movement patterns are all involved and orchestrated by the motor cortex in the cerebral hemispheres concerned with voluntary movements.  Furthermore, good fine motor skill, which is needed for neat handwriting, stems from well-developed sensory and motor foundations which result in muscle and joint stability, especially in the neck, trunk and arms. Accurate tactile discrimination and hand and finger strength help to control writing instruments.  Motor planning, the coordination of the two sides of the body and the development of hand and eye dominance are also involved in laying down pre-writing skills.

While we are learning the motor skills needed for handwriting, the area of the brain called the cerebellum is involved as well.  This brain area memorises all the complex muscular actions involved in a particular skilled movement so that it can take over control of movements, leaving the higher levels of the brain free to do the actual thinking and learning.  If the cerebellum is damaged or underdeveloped then skilled movements are not easy to execute.  Coordination problems are typical signs of cerebellar irregularities so learners who cannot coordinate the movements needed for fluid, rapid writing might be suffering from inefficient cerebellar functioning.

In other words, problems with handwriting can be important signals that neurodevelopment has not progressed as it should have.  Rather than doing away with handwriting lessons it might be wiser to consider the underlying reasons for problems in this area.

Arguments in favour of cursive writing

Once the cerebellum has mastered the print form of letters, it has to learn an entirely new set of motor programmes when cursive writing is introduced.   Some schools in certain countries teach cursive from the beginning, but most prefer starting with print, because all children’s stories, reading schemes and other forms of written communication use printed script.

There are some experts who advocate the use of cursive from as early on as possible. This is because cursive has a major advantage in the fact that each word or syllable consists of one continuous line where all the elements flow together.  This means that a young learner experiences more readily the total form or shape of a given word as he or she processes the kinaesthetic feedback from the writing movements.  In this way, handwriting supports spelling which in turn contributes to literacy development.

Cursive writing facilitates speed of writing which, until things change dramatically in schools and universities, is a crucial factor of academic success.  Slow writers struggle with taking down notes in class and managing to impart knowledge during written exams.

Furthermore, cursive writing is said to be particularly helpful for learners with handwriting coordination difficulties.  Research in the area[1] shows that cursive

  • Stops reversals and inversion of letters
  • Induces greater fluency in writing which enables greater speed to be developed without loss of legibility
  • Enables more to be written in the time
  • Can improve spelling accuracy
  • Results in orderly and automatic space between letters and between words
  • Reduces the paid and difficulty experienced by pupils with coordination difficulties
  • Improves legibility of writing
  • Reinforces multisensory learning linking spelling, writing and speaking

In addition, it is known that insight and memory are enhanced by the use of multiple brain areas.  Hence the encouragement of using notes and summaries as a good study skill.  When we engage our hands to work with the brain in organising and understanding new materials, we naturally find it easier to comprehend and then recall content.

In the remedial field, it has been known for decades that the teaching of cursive writing benefitted learners with difficulties in learning and handwriting. Lack of good teaching can contribute to underachievement in schools but there seems to be some evidence that neglecting the teaching of handwriting can play a role too.

Will keyboards eradicate the problems of many underachievers or will they be somehow further disadvantaged by foregoing the benefits offered by learning handwriting – especially cursive writing?  One can only hope that further research will shed more light on this puzzling question.

Keep those pencils sharpened!

Some of us groan at the memory of those schooldays when we had to practice our handwriting because producing neat letters wasn’t easy.  It still isn’t for many – and for many others, our handwriting has deteriorated due to lack of practice.   And many of our children hardly have to worry about handwriting any more.  So do we encourage it or not?

Anabela Malpique, Deborah Pasternak and Susan Ledger have researched this question and find that youngsters need to be able to write with paper and pen as well as learning to type on a keyboard.

Their research

In a study published last month, they involved 544 children from 17 primary schools in Perth, Western Australia.  They assessed how easily students wrote stories using paper and pencil compared to writing stories using a laptop. they found they produced longer and higher-quality handwritten texts. This was based on ten criteria, including ideas, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.

These findings echoed their earlier study, completed in December 2023 where they did a meta-analysis of studies published between 2000–2022. These compared the effects of writing by hand or keyboard on primary students’ writing.

They looked at 22 international studies involving 6,168 participants from across different countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and other non-native English-speaking countries, such as Germany and Portugal.

Their analysis showed primary students produce higher quality texts using paper and pen or pencil than when using a keyboard.

Why does handwriting produce better quality texts?

In most countries children are taught to write by hand before learning to type.  Studies show that teaching handwriting in the first years of schooling is connected to improved spelling and greater capacity to write well and quickly in primary and later years of schooling.

Other studies show that using handwriting to create texts (such as notes) promotes our capacity to learn and memorize information.

Of course, in our current age, it is important for children to be able to use a keyboard too. They will need to use keyboards to write for study, work and life as they get older. This process needs to become automatic so they can concentrate on the content of what they are writing.

Research has also shown that when young children struggle with neat handwriting or typing, they may often avoid writing altogether, so both fluid handwriting and competent keyboard skills are important.

Handwriting or typing  – which comes first?

While students ultimately need to be able to write both on paper and using digital devices, there are unanswered questions about the order in which handwriting and typing should be taught or whether they should be taught together.

We also don’t yet know if it matters whether students are learning to write via keyboards, touch typing on tablets or by using stylus pens (devices that look like pencils and write via screens).

More research is needed to support teachers, students and families.

How to help your child

Despite these unknowns, there are many things we can do to help children learn how to write on paper and using a keyboard. These include:

  • dedicating time for practice: teachers can build regular times in class to write and send home small tasks (such as writing a shopping list, finishing a story or describing a monster)
  • joining in: instead of “policing” your child’s writing, show them what you write in your everyday life. As you write, you can talk about what you will write (planning) and you can share ideas about how you can make your writing clearer or more exciting.
  • talk about your mistakes and find ways of correcting your writing: when adults talk about their errors or doubts, they make them a natural part of the process.
  • ask children to read what they have written: this provides opportunities for correction and celebration. Praise children’s bold attempts such as using new words or experimenting with expressions.
  • give children choice: this gives children some control. For example, they can choose a topic, they can mix art and letters or they can choose paper or keyboard.
  • display their writing: make children’s writing visible on your walls or fridge or as wallpapers on your devices to instil a sense a pride in what they have done.

Do we still need to teach handwriting?

Even though adults seldom communicate by means of pens these days, it seems that there is good reason to continue teaching children how to write legibly. 

Lucinda McKnight an Maria Nicholas discuss this in The Conversation.  They remind us of how the world of writing is changing very quickly.  From graduating from pen-and-paper to keyboards, we have speech-to-text software and future developments might see decoders that read brain activity so we don’t even have to use our hands to write at all.  ‘Writing’ may be completely changed.

McKnight and Nicholas believe that there are still reasons why teaching cursive handwriting is necessary.

  1. Fine motor skills

Handwriting develops critical fine motor skills and the coordination needed to control precise movements. These movements are required to conduct everyday home and work-related activities.  It is also these motor skills that allow handwriting to become legible and fluent as we develop and (interesting thought) who knows that technology might change course and we are taken back to the past.  There is a caution that using technology and AI might allow learners to cheat on tests so handwritten answers may be required.

  1. It helps you remember

Handwriting has important cognitive benefits, including memory. Research suggests traditional pen-and-paper notes aid memory, due to the greater complexity of the handwriting process. In addition, reading and handwriting are closely linked.  Learners become better readers through practicing writing.

  1. It’s good for well-being

Handwriting, and related activities such as drawing, are tactile, creative and reflective sources of pleasure and wellness for writers of all ages. Many people enjoy calligraphy and handwriting journals.

  1. It’s very accessible

Handwriting does not need electricity, devices, batteries, software, subscriptions, a fast internet connection, a keyboard, charging time or the many other things on which digital writing depends. It only needs pen and paper. It can be done anywhere and is particularly useful when it comes to writing a birthday card, filling in printed forms and so on.

  1. It’s about thinking

Most importantly, learning to write and learning to think are intimately connected. As we write, we form, develop and organise ideas.  Thinking can’t be outsourced to technology.

In summary, while writing perfect cursive may become less important in the future, people of all ages will still need to be able to write legibly and fluently in their education and in their broader lives.
